With the advancement of technology, we are not only seeing an increasing presence of automation in our daily lives, but also often told that automation guarantees success on every single execution. However, my experience disagrees. The pattern that I have observed with automation is that yes, it might work perfectly for a bit, but it inevitably fails at some point. And human intervention is always required to clean up such failures and redo its job.

“I’m Tired of Cleaning Your Mess” is a human-robotic arm performance that explores my frustration with automation. The storyline can be divided into three acts, where each act features a few successful executions of scooping rice from a pot to a bowl, followed by its own unique failure. While after the first two failures, I go up stage, clean up its mess, and restart the process, by the third time, I become fed up with the pattern. Instead, I shut off the machine, manually execute the task myself, and walk off stage.
